Hilary R. W. Johnson

Hilary Richard Wright Johnson (1837–1901) was a Liberian politician, educator, and diplomat who served as the 11th President of Liberia from 1884 to 1892. He was the longest-serving president in Liberian history, holding office for eight years. Johnson played a key role in expanding Liberia’s influence, promoting education, and improving foreign relations.

  • Born on June 1, 1837, in Monrovia, Liberia, to Americo-Liberian settlers.

  • Son of Elijah Johnson, one of Liberia’s founding fathers.

  • Educated at Liberia College (now the University of Liberia) and became a prominent scholar and writer.
