Edward J. Roye
Edward James Roye (1815–1872) was the 5th President of Liberia, serving from 1870 to 1871. Born in Newark, Ohio, USA, to free African-American parents, he was well-educated and became a successful businessman before emigrating to Liberia in 1846. Roye was a strong advocate for the True Whig Party, which later became Liberia’s dominant political force. His presidency was marked by efforts to secure foreign loans for Liberia’s development, but his tenure was cut short by political turmoil, leading to his overthrow in 1871.
Early Life and Move to Liberia​
Edward James Roye was born on February 3, 1815, in Newark, Ohio, USA, to free African-American parents of Igbo descent. His father was a successful merchant and boat builder, which provided Roye with a privileged upbringing and access to quality education. He attended Ohio University, where he received formal education—an uncommon opportunity for African Americans at the time. After completing his studies, Roye became a successful businessman and moved into the haircare industry, accumulating wealth through his ventures. In 1846, inspired by the ideals of African self-governance, he emigrated to Liberia, a newly founded African republic established by freed African Americans. In Liberia, he quickly became involved in politics and commerce, using his business acumen to gain influence in the nation’s development.

In Liberia, Roye quickly gained prominence through business and politics. He became an advocate for the True Whig Party, which later dominated Liberian politics. He held various government positions, including Chief Justice of Liberia, before being elected Liberia’s 5th President in 1870.
