Wilton Sankawolo

Wilton Gbakolo Sengbe Sankawulo Sr. (July 26, 1937 – February 21, 2009) was a distinguished Liberian politician, author, and educator. He served as the Chairman of the Council of State of Liberia from September 1, 1995, to September 3, 1996, during a critical transitional period in the nation's history

Early Life and Education

Born in Haindii, Bong County, Liberia, Sankawulo began his education at Lutheran mission schools, graduating from the Lutheran Institute in 1959. He continued his studies at Cuttington College and Divinity School (now Cuttington University), earning a bachelor's degree in education in 1963. He furthered his theological education at the Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary in Berkeley, California, obtaining a master's degree in divinity. Additionally, he earned a Master of Fine Arts in English from the University of Iowa.

Literary Career

Sankawulo was renowned for his contributions to Liberian literature. In 1974, he published "The Marriage of Wisdom, and Other Tales," a collection of Liberian stories that showcased his deep understanding of the nation's folklore. He followed this with "Why Nobody Knows When He Will Die" and the novel "The Rain and the Night" in 1979. His posthumously published novel, "Birds Are Singing," was released in 2010.

Political Career

Sankawulo's political journey included serving as Director-General of the Cabinet from 1983 to 1985 and as Special Assistant for Academic Affairs to President Samuel K. Doe. In 1995, during Liberia's civil unrest, he was appointed Chairman of the Council of State, effectively acting as the head of state. His tenure lasted until September 3, 1996, after which Ruth Perry succeeded him.

Death and Legacy

Wilton Sankawulo passed away from congestive heart failure on February 21, 2009, at the age of 71, after being hospitalized for three weeks at the John F. Kennedy Memorial Hospital in Monrovia. He is remembered for his significant contributions to Liberian literature, education, and his role in the nation's political transition during turbulent times.
